Self-Regulation and Hope & Social Thinking 101

Dr. Pamela Crooke and Michelle Garcia Winner, co-developers of the Social Thinking® Methodology teach key Social Thinking Vocabulary, explore the ILAUGH Model of Social Cognition (including basic strategies associated with each area), and highlight the importance of going “back to basics” for some social learners. You’ll gain strategies for developing metacognitive awareness of self-regulation and discover how these can promote a sense of hope in students/clients and caregivers.

The presenters have modified parts of her core content and strategies to address some of the issues we are all dealing with during this global pandemic. With the pandemic as the backdrop, this keynote will explore core lessons learned and refined over 25 years of clinical practice. We will be highlighting the power of metacognitive awareness, the difference between helplessness and hope, and defining key practical strategies to help guide our students/clients to better manage their emotions and lives–learnings that have perhaps never been more important than now.


Social Thinking® 101

Whether you’re relatively new to the Social Thinking Methodology or are a seasoned practitioner, it’s always a good idea to get a quick refresher about core concepts and vocabulary from time to time. This 90-minute session will provide attendees with an overview of key Social Thinking Vocabulary, the ILAUGH Model of Social Cognition (including basic strategies associated with each area), and the importance of going “back to basics” for some learners.


Who Should Attend

The Social Thinking Methodology is used by a wide variety of professionals; including speech-language pathologists, special and general education teachers, social workers, counselors, clinical and school psychologists, occupational therapists, behavior specialists, and school administrators to name a few. It’s also used by family members and caregivers across settings.

  1. Explain why our students/clients do not learn to be helpless and how we can help them learn to pursue “hope."
  2. Describe the power of language in helping our students and clients develop internal reasoning and problem solving.
  3. Explain how to teach flexible thinking to students/clients through the use of a Social Behavior Map to understand shifting social expectations during a pandemic.

Social Thinking® 101

  1. Define how teaching Social Thinking is different than teaching social skills.
  2. Describe three to five strategies associated with the ILAUGH Model.
